I’m starting to wonder what’s in the water over in the UK because we have found another new favorite band from across the pond. Newcastle band Cat Ryan has just released a brand new single “Mannerism” that is guaranteed to make you wish you were on an island in the sun.

As crazy as it sounds, I feel like I could sense in my bones that Cat Ryan was going to blow me away with this track even before hitting play, and I was not disappointed. With a flawless blend of folk, synth-pop and indie rock, “Mannerism” is a fun summer jam in the making.

Calling to mind the likes of Vampire Weekend or Little Comets, there’s a lot to love about this song musically. Dizzying and vibrant, an infectious banjo riff after the chorus serves up a high dose of energy throughout the song that pairs so well with a pulsating bassline and punchy drums. Topped off with an infectious guitar riff, “Mannerism” swirls around your head and seeps into your body until you can’t help but dance along to lead singer Mary-Anne Murphy’s vocals.

With thoughtful lyricism, “Mannerism” is a “they like me, they like me not” story in an earnest and reflective way. Employing a candid and witty spirit that reminds me of some of my favorite Nate Ruess lyrics, Cat Ryan lays out all the frustrations that come with trying to figure out where you stand with someone. The final lines of the song give off a “throw your hands up in the air in frustration” vibe that is painfully relatable. Breaking out of the insecurities that come with trying to read someone can feel maddening at times, and the “merry-go-round” effect of Cat Ryan’s arrangement on “Mannerism” is a perfect choice - showcasing a light-hearted defiance that feels beyond sad or upset, just dizzy and tired and ready to get off this ride.

From start to finish, “Mannerism” is a joy to listen to and a great introduction to an exciting new band. If “Mannerism” is any indication of what we can expect from Cat Ryan in the future, then I’m all ears and ready for whatever’s next! Listen to “Mannerism” out now on all platforms!
